In observance of Commonwealth Day, the Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association (TTCGA) joined regional partners across the Caribbean in a Commonwealth Day Tree Planting Initiative, a symbolic action promoting environmental sustainability and collective responsibility among the Commonwealth of Nations.
Commonwealth Day, observed annually on the second Monday in March, celebrates the unity and shared purpose of the Commonwealth’s 56 member nations. This year, countries across the Commonwealth Caribbean participated in coordinated tree planting activities to demonstrate regional solidarity and a shared commitment to climate action.
In Trinidad and Tobago, the initiative took place on Monday, March 9, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the a few meters from the newly acquired TTCGA building at corner of Robinsonville and Norfolk Street in Belmont, bringing together community members, youth volunteers, sporting representatives, and national stakeholders.
Participating schools, sporting bodies, youth groups, and community organizations planted seedlings at various locations across the country as a visible and lasting commitment to Commonwealth values, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.
Delivering opening remarks at the Belmont ceremony, Diane Henderson, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association, thanked the Mayor of Port of Spain, His Worship Mr. Chinua Allyene, his office and Belmont Councilor Ms. Malouia Bourne for their support and hard work in making the tree planting initiative a success for the area. She also emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
“The Commonwealth reminds us that we are part of a wider family, connected across nations and cultures. This year’s theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” speaks to the power of unity”. When we join hands—whether in planting a tree, supporting a neighbor, or building new ideas—we open doors to a brighter future and the generations to come”.
“Today’s initiative reflects the spirit of the Commonwealth—unity, collaboration, and shared responsibility. By planting these trees, we are not only contributing to environmental sustainability but also leaving a legacy for future generations,”
Henderson stated.
Remarks were also delivered by Malouia Broune, Councillor for the Belmont area, who welcomed the initiative within the community and highlighted the role of local engagement in protecting the environment.
The ceremonial tree planting was carried out by President Henderson and Councillor Broune, symbolizing Trinidad and Tobago’s participation in the broader regional effort.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Belmont born, Brian Lewis, Immediate Past President of the TTCGA and Secretary General of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC), who underscored the importance of youth involvement and environmental leadership throughout the Commonwealth.
